Deets: Celebrate the 10th anniversary of Independent Bookstore Day on Saturday, April 29th in New York City with American Express.

As part of American Express’ ongoing effort to support small businesses and with the renaissance of reading on the rise, spearheaded by trends such as #BookTok, we are partnering with the American Booksellers Association (ABA), and three independent bookstores across New York to encourage Card Members to support the following small businesses:

The Lit Bar /131 Alexander Ave, Bronx, NY
The Lit Bar, the Bronx’s only independent brick and mortar bookstore, is a woman-owned shop founded by Noelle Santos. In 2015 Santos saw that the last bookstore in the Bronx was in danger of closing, so she left her corporate job with a mission to save the last bookstore in her community. The store closed its doors during the pandemic, but reopened last November on Small Business Saturday. The shop offers a curated selection of books, gifts, and programming that emphasizes the needs and diversity of the community it serves. The shop also offers a wine bar that connects social sipping and introverted reading.

Book Club Bar / 197 E 3rd St, NYC
Book Club Bar is an independent book shop located in the East Village in Manhattan. Husband-and-wife duo Erin Neary and Nat Esten (who met through book club!) opened the shop in November 2019, just one month after they married and moments before the pandemic. Currently, the store hosts nightly events including readings, drink and draws, poetry slams, adult spelling bees, and more. Book Club Bar remains open until midnight daily, and includes a bar stocked with coffee, beer, and wine as well as an outdoor patio for customers to socialize, read, and work.

Greenlight Bookstore / 686 Fulton St, Brooklyn, NY
Greenlight Bookstore is an independently owned and operated bookshop with a location in Fort Greene in Brooklyn. The woman-owned shop was founded in 2009 and combines the best traditions of a neighborhood bookstore with a forward-looking sensibility. Their mission is focused on creating welcoming spaces for discovery, conversation, and connections around books. Greenlight Bookstore also has a podcast where they host authors to discuss their newest books.

Hint for the Average Socialite: American Express Card Members will have the opportunity to receive a $25 gift card that they can use towards their next book of choice.
