Deets: Internationally acclaimed artist Bruce Munro will debut his immersive public art installation Field of Light, spanning more than six-acres from 38th to 41st Street on First Avenue, just south of the United Nations, at the proposed mixed-use Freedom Plaza being developed by the Soloviev Group.

Field of Light at Freedom Plaza will span more than six-acres from 38th to 41st Street east of First Avenue and will feature an array of 17,000 lowlight, fiber-optic stemmed spheres. Guests will be fully immersed in the installation as they are invited to walk the winding path through the ethereal painted landscape framed by the city’s iconic skyline and the East River waterfront.

Opening to the public this Winter, Field of Light at Freedom Plaza will remain in place for 12 months., Field of Light will transform this six-acre site into a welcoming art installation for members of the community and all New Yorkers, as well as present meaningful opportunities for engagement and educational programming.

Made possible by the Soloviev Foundation, Field of Light will honor New York City as a beacon of freedom and hope around the world. Inspired by the human connection to the stars, the essential elements of our universe, the Freedom Plaza installation will feature an array of 17,000 lowlight, fiber-optic stemmed spheres, which will illuminate with a slow, subtle change of hue. The effect will be that of a muted and ethereal painted landscape. Existing at the nexus of art, technology and nature, Field of Light will create a contemplative moment in this totally unique waterfront open space. 

London-born Munro is globally recognized for large-scale light-based artworks inspired by his lifelong study of natural light and curiosity about shared human experiences.

Deets: The world’s most famous ice-skating rink is returning to Rockefeller Center for its 88th season this fall. Those planning ahead for the holiday season are able to purchase tickets for The Rink now.

Originally designed as a temporary attraction to draw visitors to Rockefeller Center’s outdoor plaza in 1936, The Rink became a permanent fixture in 1939. Since then, it has evolved into one of the city’s most legendary landmarks and most-visited sites, hosting more than a quarter of a million skaters annually.

Holiday Specials

The holiday season is a magical time at Rockefeller Center and beginning in September holiday ticket packages will be available for purchase, in addition to ice skating packages. Holiday ticket options will include: 

• Professional photos taken in front of the iconic Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree;

• Reservations for Rock Center’s cozy Après Skate holiday chalets featuring food, beverage and an unparalleled front row view of The Rink at Rockefeller Center and the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree;

The crowning jewel of Rockefeller Center’s revitalization, The Skylift, will open at the Top of the Rock Observation Deck this fall. The new Skylift experience will elevate visitors nearly 900 feet in the air and rotate slowly for spectacular, entirely unobstructed, 360-degree views of the New York City skyline that can’t be found anywhere else. It follows The Beam, an interactive photo experience on the 69th Floor of 30 Rockefeller Plaza that recreates the famous 1932 photograph “Lunch Atop a Skyscraper.” The iconic Rockefeller Christmas Tree will return this holiday season through January 2025.

The exhibition culminates in the 2000s, spotlighting the continued diversification of characters within the Barbie universe and connecting them to contemporary fashion trends, perspectives, and identities.

The exhibition, curated by Karan Feder and drawn from the private collection of David Porcello and Mattel, also features more than 50 historical objects and five unique photo opportunities, including a life-size Barbie Ultra 'Vette™ with which visitors can interact. The exhibit will also showcase the Barbie Signature 65th Blue Sapphire Anniversary Fashion Dolls, paying homage to the iconic history and legacy of Barbie.

Deets: This holiday season, the New York Transit Museum continues its annual tradition of Holiday Nostalgia Rides on our vintage 1930s R1/9 cars! Operating between 2nd Avenue – Houston Street on the uptown F line and 96th Street – 2nd Avenue on the Q line, the Holiday Nostalgia Train will transport straphangers back in time every Sunday in December. Hop aboard and celebrate the magic of New York City during the holidays!

The Holiday Nostalgia Train consists of eight cars from the 1930s that ran along lettered lines through the late-1970s. The vintage Independent Subway System (IND) cars were used by the first subway company operated by the City of New York. Modern for their time, the R1/9s complimented the IND’s Depression-Era Art Deco aesthetic. Featuring rattan seats, paddle ceiling fans, incandescent light bulbs, roll signs, and period advertisements, these are the cars that inspired Billy Strayhorn’s “Take the A Train.” Today, they are preserved as part of the New York Transit Museum’s collection.
