14TH ANNUAL ESSENCE BLACK WOMEN IN HOLLYWOOD AWARDS, VIRTUAL

BWIH-2021_article-toute3-1920x1080.jpg

Deets: The news of Derek Chauvin’s guilty verdict in the murder of George Floyd has caused many to reflect on the seemingly endless challenges—and endless hope, fight and resilience—that the Black community has experienced and demonstrated, particularly over the past year. Chronicling “the year that changed the world,” ESSENCE—the leading and only 100% Black-owned media, technology and commerce company at scale dedicated to Black women and communities—today debuted its May/June 2021 issue cover as a striking visual interpretation that juxtaposes the challenges and triumphs of a community after an unprecedented year of heightened social and political unrest, police brutality, economic and health inequities, COVID-19 and more. The quilt artwork cover, created by contemporary artist Bisa Butler and commissioned exclusively by ESSENCE, is one-of-a-kind and the first-of-its-kind used by ESSENCE for a cover in its more than 50-year history. Butler is widely recognized for her depictions of African-American identity and life in the American experience, combining portraiture and the highly skilled craft and tradition of quilting to deliver engaging pieces that spark dialogue.

ESSENCE assembled an array of notable voices—from activists, journalists, artists and writers—who shared their perspectives on witnessing history unfold, creating change and being champions for freedom. Guest contributors include: activist and author Tamika Mallory, who shared an excerpt from her upcoming book State of Emergency; CNN anchor Abby Phillip; journalist and scholar Clint Smith; Paris-based producer Robin Allison Davis; race, culture and identity writer Kovie Biakolo; writer/activist Kimberly Latrice Jones; activist Lynee Vanee Bogues; and more. The issue also features ESSENCE CEO Caroline Wanga’s debut column entitled “Plate Full of Parsley,” which accentuates power, equity and authenticity as key ingredients for a new kind of soul food for the sisterhood.

ESSENCE’s ongoing focus on social justice, economic inclusion and equity issues will be highlighted this week in its upcoming airing of the 2021 ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood Awards, on ESSENCE.com and ESSENCEStudios.com this Thursday, April 22. Building on its years of providing platforms to ensure Black creatives were recognized when others ignored them and that they continue to “receive their flowers” for their contributions to Hollywood and global culture, this year’s experience, with the theme “Mastering Our Stories,” will focus on the resiliency of Black women in Hollywood through the years—including during the unprecedented pandemic.

ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood is presented by Ford and sponsored by American Airlines, Coca-Cola, Korbel and L’Oréal Pari

SOUND/STAGE SEASON 2 CONCERT SERIES, VIRTUAL

@LAPhil

@LAPhil

Deets: The Los Angeles Philharmonic announced the details of the second season of Sound/Stage, beginning Friday, March 5, 2021, with new episodes released through June 25, 2021. With Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel acting as host, the free online series features new performances by the LA Phil; Oscar and Grammy Award-winning artist, activist, author and actor Common; Grammy Award-winning gospel duo Mary Mary; opera star Nadine Sierra; Grammy-Award winner singer-songwriter and one of the world’s greatest ambassadors for Latin music Carlos Vives; and acclaimed pianists Yuja Wang and David Fung; as well as conversations with LA Phil Creative Chair John Adams and renowned chef José Andrés. Also appearing in his LA Phil debut is Martín Dudamel Marturén, Gustavo Dudamel’s nine-year-old son. Each episode includes one or more special segments, ranging from animated shorts to interviews between Dudamel and his guests. The second season of Sound/Stage and supporting material, including artist-curated playlists, program notes and insights from Dudamel on how each program came together, will be available at laphil.com/soundstage.

FULL LIST OF EPISODES HERE.

The series launches with The Carnival of the Animals, in which Dudamel is joined by his nine-year-old son Martín as co-host. Together they discuss some of the earliest forms of storytelling and how animal stories can teach us about the natural world and ourselves. The performance by pianists Yuja Wang and David Fung of Camille Saint-Saëns’ The Carnival of the Animals is accompanied by four folktales from different parts of the world brought to life by India’s Ghost Animation and narrated by Martín and young musicians associated with El Sistema programs around the world.

In the second episode, A Pan-American Musical Feast explores the connection between great music and great food. Interwoven between music by composers from across the Americas—Tania León, Paul Desenne and Aaron Copland—is a conversation between Dudamel and his friend José Andrés, the Spanish chef and founder of World Central Kitchen, in which they discuss how various cultural expressions meet in their respective crafts and form the basis of their humanitarian work.

To accompany The Carnival of the Animals and A Pan-American Musical Feast, the LA Phil is releasing an online Symphonies for Schools experience. This flexible, immersive program is available to schools, teachers and youth from around the world at no cost and includes curricula and activities to guide youth along the Sound/Stage performances. The experience also includes a Hollywood Bowl Virtual Field Trip. Registration opens February 23, and educators who register will also receive a special professional development video resource.

The series continues with the Easter Sunrise at the Hollywood Bowl episode, in which Dudamel takes a look at the LA Phil’s very first concert at the Hollywood Bowl 100 years ago, as well as the venue’s connection with The Ford. Accompanied by archival images, the program explores the long-standing tradition of both venues’ openness to a wide and diverse range of artists, with Mozart’s celebratory Exsultate, jubilate performed by soprano Nadine Sierra, and gospel duo Mary Mary singing a hymn performed at that first Bowl concert 100 years ago, “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name,” in a special arrangement by composer Carlos Simon.

The next episode, titled Grand Pianola Music and based on composer and LA Phil Creative Chair John Adams’ 1981 work, shifts to more recent history. In it, Dudamel interviews Adams about the piece and the dream that inspired it. Photographer and video artist Deborah O’Grady provides visual accompaniment to the performance, which features sopranos Holly Sedillos and Elissa Johnston and mezzo-soprano Kristen Toedtman.

Episode five of Sound/Stage, Unfinished, focuses on Schubert’s Eighth Symphony. In his introduction, Dudamel discusses famous works of art that were never finished and the pleasure of the mysteries their creators left behind.

Prior to the final two episodes, audiences will take a virtual visit to The Ford and Walt Disney Concert Hall, where five chamber performances featuring LA Phil musicians were filmed. The Walt Disney Concert Hall performance of the Mendelssohn work was the first at the venue since March of 2020. These performances, available weekly between May 7and June 4, feature excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s String Sextet in D minor, Op. 70, “Souvenir de Florence,” Piazzolla’s Tango Ballet for String Quartet, Fanny Mendelssohn’s String Quartet in E-flat major, Clara Schumann’s Piano Trio in G minor, and Arturo Márquez’ Homenaje a Gismonti.

Returning to the Bowl stage, the sixth episode of the Sound/Stage series features Common with Dudamel and the LA Phil. The artist, who recently appeared in the LA Phil’s Icons on Inspiration online event, joins Dudamel for a conversation filmed at the Bowl about the program and their mutual musical interests.

To complete the series, close Dudamel friend Carlos Vives, who also recently appeared in Icons on Inspiration, returns to the Bowl to perform a special acoustic set with the orchestra. Their conversation about the program is also included in the episode.

All Sound/Stage performances were filmed outdoors at the Hollywood Bowl under strict adherence to public health guidelines, with all performers maintaining social distance. The chamber performances were filmed at The Ford and Walt Disney Concert Hall without an audience and also in strict compliance with public health guidelines.

The second season of Sound/Stage is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.

HEROES OF NEW YORK- A ROBIN HOOD SPECIAL, VIRTUAL

@robinhoodnyc

@robinhoodnyc

Deets: Robin Hood, New York’s largest poverty-fighting organization, and iHeartRadio joined together to broadcast “Heroes of New York” to celebrate the true impact of the extraordinary generosity and selflessness of New Yorkers, featuring innovative and dedicated individuals and organizations who have continued to help our neighbors in need. The citywide, star-studded, one-hour show shed a light on the selfless efforts by New Yorkers from all walks of life to bring awareness and provide assistance to those who have been dramatically impacted by COVID-19.

Notable appearances included: Governor Andrew Cuomo, Al Pacino,Andra Day, Andy Cohen, The Breakfast Club’s DJ Envy, Angela Yee andCharlamagne tha God, Eli Manning, Ice T, John McEnroe, Jon Stewart, Justin Tuck, Kelly RipaKevin Bacon, Kyra SedgwickMariano RiveraMariska Hargitay, Michael Che, Michael Strahan, Ryan SeacrestTina Fey and Tracy Morgan. The show also featured performances by Andra Day who sang “Silent Night,” Mariah Carey who performed a special medley of three songs, David Bowie’s “Heroes,” her own “Hero,” and “Joy to the World,” and Tony Bennett, who sang “Smile.”

 “New York is a special place. It’s got a grit and a determination all of its own and this year we saw that on full display. But when COVID-19 hit, this city quickly became the nation’s epicenter. For Black and Latinx New Yorkers and immigrant populations, these disparities are not new. In fact, over the past four years, half of the entire city lived in poverty for at least a year. With your help, we have supported over 600 organizations on the front lines,” said Wes Moore, CEO of Robin Hood. Moore continued: “We need federal action to increase food aid so that families don’t have to choose between paying rent and putting food on the table. And we need state action on COVID-19 relief that supports every one of our neighbors regardless of their immigration status.”

The special raised awareness of the efforts of the following everyday New Yorkers whose impact is drastically helping their community. These heroes are amongst countless others who are helping sustain the city through a very difficult time, and this hour gave New Yorkers the opportunity to express their gratitude:

  • Orayne Williams of The Bronx Defenders: Orayne came to the U.S. from Jamaica as a young teenager, and struggled with homelessness while still in high school in Bed-Stuy. Despite living in a homeless shelter, he persevered and went on to become Valedictorian and to obtain his B.A. and M.S.W. degrees. Upon graduating, Orayne joined The Bronx Defenders who provide comprehensive legal and social services to families caught in the criminal legal and family regulation systems in the Bronx. In his role as a social worker, Orayne serves homeless youth and incarcerated young adults, leveraging his superpower of empathy and shared experience to serve those in need.

  • Taina Rodriguez of Part of the Solution (POTS): Taina started visiting POTS in the Bronx at age 11 with her family who was struggling with food insecurity. When she was 14, POTS hired Taina as a cleaner, and since then she has since worn many hats for the organization, including cook and volunteer coordinator. Taina is currently serving as the Associate Director of POTS’ Food and Dignity Programs, overseeing emergency food and day-to-day programs. Since she first visited the soup kitchen, POTS has grown to become the leading provider of emergency food, social services, case management and legal representation in the Bronx, acting as a “one-stop shop” to help low-income individuals and families move from crisis to stability and ultimately self-sufficiency.

  • Bonnie Coover and Justice Marin of Center for Urban Community Services (CUCS): Bonnie is a Nurse Practitioner and Justice is a Medical Assistant who work on CUCS’s street medicine team providing medical care for New Yorkers experiencing homelessness. Throughout the pandemic, this duo has been scouring the streets of NYC to locate people who need medical attention, COVID testing, and referrals to resources, housing, and mental health services. CUCS helps individuals and families throughout NYC rise from poverty, exit homelessness, and be healthy.

  • Allison Julien of National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA): Allison came from Barbados and was working as a nanny when she got involved with advocating for labor rights for domestic workers. She has since become a founding member of the NDWA, who act as the nation’s leading voice for domestic workers who Allison lovingly refers to as the backbone of New York City. Throughout the pandemic, Allison has helped to get cash assistance to thousands of domestic workers on the frontlines of the pandemic.

  • Athenia Rodney of United for Brownsville: Athenia is a wife, mother of three, entrepreneur, change maker, and a member of United for Brownsville’s Family Advisory Board (FAB). The FAB is a group of resident leaders who steer the work of United for Brownsville — a collaboration between SCO Family of Services and Community Solutions — to create a more equitable early childhood system in their community. As the pandemic hit, Athenia stepped into a new role as a staff member of United for Brownsville, where she has worked to create resource guides, virtual learning sessions for children, support groups for families, and more, to create community-led solutions for her neighbors.

Funds raised through “Heroes of New York” will support Robin Hood’s relief and recovery efforts to help fellow New Yorkers rebuild their lives. One hundred percent of donations raised are deployed directly to the organizations on the frontlines who are providing support for food, shelter, cash assistance, health and mental health, legal services, education and more.

“People say that New York City has a tough veneer — but when you meet these heroes who will risk their lives to drive a subway car, run a homeless shelter or give their last dollar to a neighbor who can’t eat, you realize that this city is truly one of the most compassionate places on earth,” said John Sykes, iHeartMedia’s President of Entertainment Enterprises.

The show closed with the debut of “We Will Rise,” a tribute to the sacrifices of the frontline workers who saved New York City at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Heroes of New York” is produced by Alex Coletti Productions, Alex Coletti Executive Producer and John Sykes, iHeartMedia’s President of Entertainment Enterprises, along with Co-Executive Producers Casey Patterson, Rick Krim and Marta Ravin.
