Deets: Big & Loud, the Paris Theater’s extravaganza of cinema’s most unforgettable sensory experiences, returns for three more weeks of 70mm, Dolby Atmos, and audio-obsessive cinema starting on Friday, October 4th and playing through the end of the month. As we conclude our second year of visual and sonic feasts at Manhattan’s last remaining single-screen movie palace, we’ve got more one-of-a-kind, extraordinary film-going experiences packed into each day than ever before. The return of the screening series also follows a month of major visual presentation updates, including upgraded 35mm and 70mm film projectors, new Christie laser projectors, as well as a repositioned screen that improves sightlines for every seat in the historic theater.
New 70mm prints of Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest and John Ford’s The Searchers headline a collection of can’t-miss 70mm screenings, a singular viewing experience cherished by cinema lovers around the world. Experience the mind-bending psychedelia of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, the lush Western panorama in Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, the action-packed dreamworld of Christopher Nolan’s Inception, Brian De Palma’s virtuosic crime thriller The Untouchables, Kenneth Branagh’s sublime adaptation of Hamlet, and returning for a second year, Lawrence of Arabia. Roger Ebert once remarked that seeing David Lean’s epic in 70mm was “on the short list of things that must be done during the lifetime of every lover of film.”
Big & Loud will feature an array of classics and new hits specially mixed in Dolby Atmos format, an audio system that allows the viewer to be fully immersed in a film’s sonic landscape. Highlights include Steven Spielberg’s Jaws, Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner: The Final Cut, Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now: Final Cut, and The Wachowskis’ The Matrix along with newer classics like Edgar Wright’s Shaun of the Dead, Apichatpong Weeresethakul’s mysterious Memoria starring Tilda Swinton, Jordan Peele’s genre-defying Nope, and Todd Field’s Tár starring an iconic Cate Blanchett.
We’ve also got a number of films joining the Big & Loud catalog for the first time presented by special guests: John Cameron Mitchell will join us in person to talk about the rock stylings of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, whose stellar soundtrack is sure to shake the walls of the Paris Theater. Film critic Bilge Ebiri will present two personal favorites: Michael Mann’s The Last of the Mohicans and Romain Gavras’ Athena. We’ll feature Akira Kurosawa’s towering masterpiece Ran, and the New York Film Critics Circle’s Stephen Garrett will be on site to introduce Robert Bresson’s A Man Escaped, the master filmmaker’s meticulously designed prison break story in which every sound registers like an earthquake as a French Resistance leader tries to remain undetected during his escape.
No series that aims to be a feast for the ears would be complete without some of film history’s most sound-obsessed titles, and we’ve got you covered – from Francis Ford Coppola’s The Conversation and Brian De Palma’s Blow Out, to the instantly recognizable Bernard Hermann score in Hitchcock’s Psycho, the death-defying acts of bravery during the Space Race in Philip Kaufman’s The Right Stuff, Julie Andrews’ powerful voice echoing through the majestic Alps in The Sound of Music, and the unforgettable 70s soundtrack of Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused.
