ABOUT POP ART

This year’s Hirshhorn Ball theme honors the legacy of pop art and artists who have turned popular and commercial culture on its head to highlight the ubiquity of art in our lives. Strikingly vibrant, witty, subversive, and innovative, artworks of the pop art movement first emerged in the 1950s and 60s, when America experienced a boom in advertising and consumption. Artists like Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Klaus Oldenburg drew from popular imagery and used methods of mass production to disrupt tradition and question popular ideals. Since then, generations of artists including Yoshitomo Nara, Katherine Bernhardt, and Alex Da Corte have continued to reclaim symbols and technologies we see and use all the time to find art in the everyday.

ABOUT THE ANNUAL HIRSHHORN BALL

Described as “a new kind of DC party” by The Washington Post, the annual Hirshhorn Ball is a one-of-a-kind themed fundraiser held each spring that invites creative communities and supporters of the national museum of modern and contemporary art to celebrate art and fashion through creative costume.
