Hot Spot: The Great Hall - Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration, NYC

Deets: The Statue of Liberty – Ellis Island Foundation will host the “Gala in the Great Hall” on Tuesday, May 19th in the Great Hall of the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration (ferries leave from Battery Park). Cocktails and the inaugural preview of the Peopling of America Center®, a major expansion of the museum covering the pre- and post-Ellis years, begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner and an awards presentation. Fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg, Broadway legend Patti LuPone, and Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr. will receive the Ellis Island Family Heritage Awards at the gala. Meredith Vieira will serve as host for the evening. Co-chairs include Albert C. Bellas, Clementina Santi Flaherty, Christopher “Kip” Forbes, Jeffrey R. Gural, and Gedale B. Horowitz. The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit organization founded in 1982 to raise funds for and oversee the historic restorations of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, working in partnership with the National Park Service/U.S. Department of the Interior. In addition to restoring the monuments, the Foundation created museums on both islands, The American Immigrant Wall of Honor®, and the American Family Immigration History Center®. Its endowment has funded over 200 projects at the islands. Its newest project The Peopling of America Center® will transform the Ellis Island museum into the National Museum of Immigration, telling the entire story of immigration to America from the earliest arrivals right up to the present day.
