Deets: Thirty years ago, a group of gifted young pianists with a bent towards new music, gathered together to lick stamps. Led by the late pianist, scholar and Schoenberg associate Leonard Stein, they sat at his dining table affixing these stamps to pre-internet postcards to announce their brand-new concert series called Piano Spheres. They hoped it might last a whole season. Music patron Betty Freeman wrote the $2,500 check that was their budget for the entire year. Now, 30 years and a few generations later, these pianists - Gloria Cheng, Vicki Ray, Mark Robson, and the late Susan Svrček have become brilliant lights in the firmament of contemporary concert music in Los Angeles and are bringing the next generation of young pianists along with them.

To celebrate this landmark 30th anniversary season, Piano Spheres presents ‘30 for 30,’ a special initiative that will commission 30 composers to write new works for the piano, to be performed by Piano Spheres’ Core Artists: Nic Gerpe, Aron Kallay, Thomas Kotcheff and Vicki Ray, Emeritus Artist Mark Robson, Stein Resident Artist Andrés Jaramillo, and Emerging Artist Thomas Mellan. All ‘30 for 30’ composers were chosen by the performers and represent an impressive sampling of local, national and international talent including Thomas Meadowcroft, Donald Crockett, Paul Beaudoin, Paul Morovec, Veronika Krausas, William Alves, Thomas Flaherty and 23 others. Guest Artist Stephen Drury will present a solo recital featuring the complete piano sonatas of Charles Ives on the 150th anniversary of his birth. Also performing will be Emerita Artist Gloria Cheng with guest pianist Ralph van Raat in a program celebrating the 100th birthday of Pierre Boulez in association with CAP UCLA.

Piano Spheres dedicates its 2024/25 season to beloved core artist Sarah Gibson and will honor her memory with a special concert on July 14th, the anniversary of her tragic passing. Gibson’s duo HOCKET with pianist Thomas Kotcheff remains on sabbatical.

October 22, 2024 | Thayer Hall, Colburn School

Charles Ives at 150: World renowned guest artist Stephen Drury will celebrate the Ives sesquicentennial with a special performance of Ives’ complete sonatas for piano, including the monumental “Concord” sonata.

November 9, 2024 | at Zipper Hall, Colburn School

Spielfreude: “Spielfreude”, the joy of playing, describes the sheer physical and emotive pleasure of performing. Music by Ligeti, Glass, Cowell, Messiaen, Schoenberg, Aldo Clementi, Ginastera and three 30 for 30 composers

December 9, 2024 | at Zipper Hall, Colburn School

For Susan and Rick: Pianists Gloria Cheng, Nic Gerpe, Aron Kallay, Thomas Kotcheff, Nelson Ojeda, Vicki Ray and Mark Robson honor Piano Spheres’ founding pianist Susan Svrcek and her composer-husband Frederick Lesemann.

January 21, 2025 | at Thayer Hall, Colburn School

A Journey of Immigrants: Colombian pianist Andrés Jaramillo specializes in the music of living LatinX composers. He will explore the myriad emotions inherent in the immigrant experience through the music of his ’30 for 30’ composers.

February 18, 2025 | at Thayer Hall, Colburn School

Brook and Meadowcroft: This concert features two new large-scale works by important international composers Taylor Brook and Thomas Meadowcroft. Both are 30 for 30 composers.

March 11, 2025 | at Thayer Hall, Colburn School

Islands: Piano Spheres’ newest Core Artist Nic Gerpe will present a range of colorful and evocative pieces which explore the many aspects and connotations of islands. Music by Donnacha Dennehy, Salina Fisher and Christopher Cerrone, with ’30 for 30’ pieces by Robert Pollock, José-Luis Hurtado and Paul Moravec.

March 26, 2025 | at Thayer Hall, Colburn School

Collective Hysteria: The Three Piano Sonatas of Pierre Boulez. Emerging Artist Thomas Mellon presents the complete piano sonatas of Pierre Boulez. Premieres of 30 for 30 pieces by organist/composer Rashaan Allwood, underground death metal legend Colin Marston and Ukrainian virtuoso violinist Orest Smovzh

April 15, 2025 | at Thayer Hall, Colburn School

Love/Dream: Aron Kallay wants an update to Franz Liszt’s Liebestraum No. 3. ’30 for 30’ composers Michael Frazier, Brandon Rolle, Zanaida Robles, Daniel Allas and Marek Zebrowski use Liebestraum as a point of departure, creating new work on what it means to love, to dream.

May 30, 2025 | at The Leonard Nimoy Theater

Celebrating Pierre Boulez: Pianists Gloria Cheng and Ralph van Raat pay homage to Pierre Boulez’s legacy in his centennial year with music by Boulez, Cage, Feldman, Gibson, Lindburg, Stravinsky and Zappa. Produced in association with CAP UCLA.

July 14, 2025 | at Zipper Hall

For Sarah: Piano Spheres’ Core and Emeritus Artists. Sarah Gibson was a brilliant pianist, composer and educator, and one of the brightest lights in our community. Along with pianist Thomas Kotcheff, she was half of the piano duo HOCKET, who joined Piano Spheres as a Core Artist in 2019. Join the Piano Spheres family as we honor her legacy on the anniversary of her passing.

Art Week at NeueHouse is celebrating feminine leadership in arts and culture, fostering collective healing through empathy, collaboration, and inclusive narratives.

Taking place from Tuesday, February 18 through Friday, February 21 at NeueHouse Venice Beach, this inspiring four-day long series will highlight work that sparks renewal, creating ripples that extend far beyond the canvas or stage.

“NeueHouse has always intended to be a gathering place for creativity,” says Martine Bury, VP of Brand Experience and Partnerships for NeueHouse. “ART& 2025 furthers this mission by providing a space for critical conversations and bold ideas that shape our cultural landscape.”

Programming highlights include:

  • Tuesday 2/18 at 6:30 PM - ART& THE FEMININE GAZE
Opening Ceremony with pioneering feminist surrealist, Penny Slinger, followed by a panel discussion on the feminine perspective in contemporary art between intergenerational women artists, and closing out with a cocktail reception and raga performance by Liberate Elemental Forces.

  • Wednesday 2/19 at 6:30 PM - ART& THE NATURAL WORLD
Conversation with two titans of land art, Lita Albuquerque and Lauren Bon, on how creative expression can reshape our understanding of landscape, community, and human potential. The evening, presented by LAELIA Tequila, features a special performance by poet and author Yrsa Daley-Ward, exploring themes of feminine power, creativity, and collective healing. Through curated conversations, healing botanical experiences, and collective vision-setting, we honor the profound impact of feminine leadership in shaping cultural narratives and driving social change.

  • Friday 2/21 at 10:00 AM - ART& REGENERATION Brunch: Paradigms of Artistry, Community Building & Healing

Featuring artists, activists, and cultural leaders—including Nao Bustamante, Patrisse Cullors, and Rugiyatou Ylva Jallow—the conversation explores artistry as a catalyst for healing, resilience, and community building amid social and environmental upheaval. Jallow, a Swedish-Gambian visual artist, brings her perspective on identity, belonging, and cultural hybridity, using bold self-portraits and intricate threadwork to examine connection and equality. Meanwhile, Bustamante and Cullors will revisit themes from a pivotal 2018 discussion at Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles, reflecting on the evolving role of the arts in civic life post-election and the responsibilities of artists in shaping sustainable futures. Rooted in regeneration, this brunch is a space for connection, reflection, and vision-building.

  • Friday 2/21 at 6:30 PM - ART& THE NEW GARDE
“ROOTS AND REALMS,” a solo exhibition featuring Rugiyatou Ylva Jallow, a Swedish-Gambian artist born in Stockholm and currently based in Los Angeles. Jallow's powerful paintings explore identity, cultural belonging, and personal narrative through bold self-portraits that integrate acrylic, oil paint, and intricate thread work. Her art delves into the complexities of mixed-race experience, using vibrant colors and symbolic imagery to represent ancestral connections and the nuanced landscapes of cultural identity. About T3
The iconic Los Angeles-based brand was created 20 years ago as a love letter from Kent Yu -- who grew up in the salon world thanks to his parents, who were both hairdressers -- to his girlfriend (now wife) Julie Chung. He set out to create a prototype of a more elevated, design-forward hair dryer after noticing that all of the products in Juliet's beauty routine were elegant, thoughtfully designed, and worthy of a space on her bathroom counter -- except for her hair tools! And so T3 was born in 2004. T3 is now a cult-favorite in the hair tools category, known for being the best at building products that deliver performance and beautiful hair. The small founder-led, founder-owned company prides itself in an all-in pursuit of their craft, singularly obsessed with products and all details of product design.

Deets:
Before banks in the U.S. had a branch on every corner, they were an exclusive service for the wealthy. For the poor, working, and immigrant class, saving money was as unreliable as stashing it under a mattress. But at the turn of the 20th century, A.P. Giannini, son of Italian immigrants, revolutionized the industry with his small Bank of Italy in San Francisco. As a first-generation Italian-American, his goal was to serve “the little fellow” and breed prosperity within his immigrant community. But, by building trust and giving loans on a simple handshake, he created one of the largest banks in the country – Bank of America.

A Little Fellow tells the story of a man who struck fear into the heart of Wall Street while having everyday people in mind. Known as “People’s banker,” he gave a friendly face to a greedy industry. As one of the first investors in Hollywood, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Hewlett-Packard, his forward-thinking helped the country through two World Wars and the Great Depression.

Deets: Mark your calendar. The LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be here in six short years. The LA28 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony is set for July 14, 2028, with the Games running through July 30, 2028, and the LA28 Paralympic Games will kick off August 15, 2028, and close August 27, 2028.

The LA28 Games will be Los Angeles’ third time hosting the Olympic Games (previously 1984, 1932) and the first time hosting the Paralympic Games. The LA28 Games will represent the creativity, diversity and youthful energy of the Los Angeles region.

The LA28 Games will use existing world-class stadiums and sports venues across the Los Angeles region, ensuring a sustainable and fiscally responsible event. The LA28 Games will feature more than 3,000 hours of live sport across 800 events in more than 40 sports. 15,000 athletes are expected to compete in the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.

The announcement of the LA28 Games dates comes as International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach and IOC member and LA28 Coordination Commission Chair Nicole Hoevertsz visited Los Angeles to review and celebrate LA28’s planning. During their time in Los Angeles, Bach and Hoevertsz met with LA28 leadership, community leaders and city officials, visited sports facilities and watched PlayLA youth sports programs made possible by the LA28 Games and the IOC’s $160 million commitment.

PlayLA launched in 2021 to ensure kids across Los Angeles have an opportunity to participate in low cost or no cost quality sports programming - including adaptive sports – in their neighborhood. The $160 million investment from the IOC and LA28 is the single largest commitment to youth sport development in California.

International Paralympic Committee President Andrew Parsons added, “All of us in the Paralympic Movement are incredibly excited about LA28. We know that the Paralympic Games are the most transformative event on earth. Everywhere they take place we leave a legacy of better accessible transport, more inclusive legislation, and a societal shift in attitudes towards persons with disabilities. In LA we are going to turbocharge that. Change starts with sport and these Games will be a vehicle to transform minds and lives. Change is already happening in local communities thanks to the fantastic work of the LA28 organizing committee. These six years are going to fly by and soon, in the entertainment capital of the world, we will with our friends in LA put on the most important show America has ever seen."

No matter how hard you try, you can’t break up with your past.

This Valentine’s Day, Oscar® winner Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once, Loki) rockets into his first major leading man role as an unlikely hero, a seemingly mild-mannered realtor with a dark secret that he is desperate to leave behind. Spoiler alert: He won’t.

From 87North—producers of the groundbreaking action films Nobody, Violent Night, Bullet Train, Atomic Blonde and The Fall Guy—comes a visceral, high-octane story of wrath and revenge.

Quan stars as Marvin Gable, a realtor working the Milwaukee suburbs, where ‘For Sale’ signs bloom. Gable receives a crimson envelope from Rose (Oscar® winner Ariana DeBose; West Side Story, Argylle), a former partner-in-crime that he had left for dead. She’s not happy.

Now, Marvin is thrust back into a world of ruthless hitmen, filled with double-crosses and open houses turned into deadly warzones. With his brother Knuckles (Daniel Wu; Tomb Raider, Warcraft), a volatile crime lord, hunting him, Marvin must confront the choices that haunt him and the history he never truly buried.
