Dairy free ice cream has always been a priority for Salt & Straw: co-founder and head ice cream maker Tyler Malek has been serving creative vegan flavors since the brand’s humble beginnings, and commits to always serving a menu that is at least 20% dairy free, with classic always available flavors like Freckled Mint Chocolate Chip and Peanut Butter Brittle Caramel Fudge and then one dairy free flavor in each of the monthly rotating menus. 

Every January, Tyler creates five ultra-indulgent ice creams that just so happen to be dairy free, proving that decadent ice cream doesn’t need any dairy at all. Tyler utilizes incredibly rich dairy alternatives, from coconut cream to oatmilk, and barley milk, to mimic the creaminess of dairy, resulting in impressively decadent ice creams inspired by classic American desserts that can be enjoyed throughout Veganuary. 

Available beginning tomorrow, Friday January 3rd through January 30th in scoop shops and via local delivery and nationwide shipping, flavors include:

  • NEW Chocolate Caramel Corn with Candied Peanuts (v) - A reinvention of a stadium favorite, this flavor features a corn infused coconut and oat milk base, with a housemade caramel candy made with freshly popped popcorn and roasted peanuts, and a chocolate stracciatella folded throughout.

  • NEW Coconut Cake & Pineapple Jam (v) - New to this year’s menu, Tyler collaborated with Gables Delight, one of the most renowned jam makers in the country, to create a tropical flavor made with their pineapple coconut jam, swirled into a rum-spiked vanilla coconut cream and topped with bits of gluten free vanilla cupcakes.

  • Death by Chocolate Chocolate Cake (v) - Chocolate in four forms: a chocolate upcycled barley milk ice cream base, rich fudge brownies made with Dutch process cocoa, vegan chocolate cake, and vegan chocolate ganache all combined into a chocolate lover’s dream ice cream.

  • Marionberry Oatmeal Cobbler (v) - This flavor is a take on a berry slab pie, made with a coconut and oat milk base spiced with cinnamon and swirled with a sweet marionberry filling and pie crust topping.

  • Bananas Foster w/ Candied Pecans (v) - Coconut cream is infused with banana and swirled with candied pecans and housemade banana caramel made with rum, brown sugar, molasses, and warming spices.

Additionally, beginning on January 17th, Salt & Straw will be partnering with Táche, the one and only pure pistachio milk on the market, at all scoop shops for exclusive vegan milkshake collaborations made with the Dairy Free Decadence flavors, available for one week only. Offerings include the  Death by Chocolate with Death by Chocolate Chocolate Cake and Freckled Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream; and Berry Banana Split with Marionberry Oatmeal Cobbler and Bananas Foster with Candied Pecan ice cream.
