Deets: For the eleventh year in a row, Hudson River Community Sailing (HRCS) will host one of its largest annual fundraisers, Dark ‘n’ Stormy, on May 15 aboard The Frying Pan, a historic lightship and popular Manhattan waterfront bar and grill. HRCS is a leading charitable organization that develops leadership and academic success for underserved New York City youth and provides maritime education and recreation to the community at large.
The fundraiser will take place from 7-10 p.m. at The Frying Pan on West 26th Street, adjacent to HRCS’s Chelsea boathouse at Pier 66. The event will feature live music by MEN or MYTH, food, an open bar, and a nautical raffle. Event tickets can be purchased online here.
All proceeds from Dark ‘n’ Stormy directly support HRCS’s youth development programs, including Sail Academy, a four-year program that uses sailing and boat-building to teach math, science, and leadership to high school students. Concepts are taught on land and water using small-group, experiential learning.
HRCS, with locations in Chelsea and Inwood, currently partners with nine New York City high schools to offer academic credit in math and science to students enrolled in Sail Academy. The academic curriculum is designed with New York City Department of Education teachers to support state standards. The organization has improved the lives of thousands of students since its founding in 2007.
“We’re so thankful to our students, sponsors, and friends in the community who help make Dark ‘n’ Stormy possible each year,” said HRCS Executive Director Robert Burke. “We are humbled by the unwavering support for our core mission: to provide students with additional tools needed to succeed in school, at work, and in life.”
The HRCS youth development programs also include internships, where students learn every aspect of running a commercial sailing school, preparing them with important job skills and career awareness.
Since its founding in 2007, HRCS has served over 20,000 youth, adults, and families; developed curricula that fuse sailing, STEM, and leadership; and built a community dedicated to helping students succeed. HRCS was recently named US Sailing’s Outstanding Community Sailing Center, an honor awarded annually to one program that has made notable contributions to promote public access to sailing. HRCS was selected for its noticeable growth in membership, programing offerings, community involvement, and overall dedication to the sport.
