Deets: September is a flurry of back to school excitement and with it, the return of UNCENSORED! DC Public Library is celebrating Banned Books Week with a city-wide banned book scavenger hunt from September 5 - September 30. This year’s theme is “Texts Against Tyranny,” and titles include dystopian fiction such as The Handmaid’s Tale, Fahrenheit 451, Parable of the Sower, and more.
Starting September 5th, a selection of several hundred banned books will be hidden throughout the District at partner locations including coffee shops, bookstores, bars, museums and more. Clues will be distributed via DCPLF’s and the Library’s social media accounts (Twitter:@dcpl_literati and @dcpl, Insta:@dcpl_literati and @dcplpubliclibrary, Facebook: @dclibrary) and in other media venues. The scavenger hunt books will be wrapped in special-edition black covers featuring a powerful quote from each of the selected titles.
UNCENSORED: Texts Against Tyranny activities taking place in the neighborhood libraries include the banned book scavenger hunt, wheatpasting workshops with local artist Dana Jeri Maier, DIY zine labs, book and artist talks, film screenings and more. We will also celebrate with thematic art installations throughout the city.
The DC Public Library Foundation’s celebration of UNCENSORED: Texts Against Tyranny will culminate with UNCENSORED Underground – an annual fundraising event benefitting the DC Public Library Foundation on Saturday, September 30 in a new location, Dupont Underground. With the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library being modernized, the DCPLF is taking UNCENSORED to a new venue, further exploring the creative community of DC. The evening will feature signature cocktails representing their favorite banned books from some of the city’s best bartenders, live music from local bands, a pop-up market featuring exclusive items curated by style guru and event chair Jennifer Barger and many other fun activities. Other event chairs include Derek Brown, DC Brau, Dupont Underground, Svetlana Legetic, Paul Ruppert, and Morgan Hungerford West.
