Deets: The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Benefit took place Monday, May 1, in celebration of the exhibition Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between, on view from May 4 through September 4 in The Met Fifth Avenue’s Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Exhibition Hall. This benefit event is The Costume Institute’s main source of annual funding for exhibitions, publications, acquisitions, and capital improvements.
The evening’s co-chairs were Tom Brady, Gisele Bündchen, Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams, and Anna Wintour. Rei Kawakubo and Ambassador Caroline Kennedy served as Honorary Chairs. This is the 19th year that Anna Wintour, who is a Met Trustee, has co-chaired the event.
Special thanks to Apple, Condé Nast, Farfetch, H&M, Maison Valentino, and Warner Bros. for their support of the exhibition and benefit.
Approximately 550 dinner guests arrived at The Met beginning at 6:30PM for an inaugural viewing of the exhibition and cocktails in the Carroll and Milton Petrie European Sculpture Court. Dinner was be served at around 8:30PM in The Temple of Dendur in The Sackler Wing, followed by dessert and a performance.
The design for the 2017 Costume Institute Benefit is created by Raul Avila, who has produced the Benefit décor since 2007.
Decor
A dress printed with black and white flowers from Rei Kawakubo’s fall 2007 read-to-wear collection for Comme des Garçons inspires the evening’s decor. Towering above the Information Desk at the center of The Met’s Great Hall is a 30-foot-tall violet design made of hot pink roses with white roses at the center. The base of the desk is trimmed in boxwood with camellias. Solid color balls made from white, pink, and hot pink or burgundy roses, measuring five feet in diameter, hang from the ceiling or sit on the floor, which is covered in hand-painted sisal carpet with royal blue trim. The blue is based on the color of a dress from Comme des Garçons’ fall 2012 collection. The stenciled sisal extends into the building from the steps outside, through the Great Hall, and up the Great Hall stairs, which are flanked by mirrored walls covered in balls made of pink and hot pink or burgundy roses. The ceiling is lit in hot pink. A wall of hot pink roses backs the receiving line at the top of the stairs.
After viewing the exhibition, guests proceed to the Petrie Court for cocktails, then enter The Temple of Dendur for dinner, walking between two walls of off-white flowers and covered in dots made from hot pink or burgundy roses. A trompe l’oeil royal blue muslin curtain, highlighted in gold, drapes the stage where the performance takes place later in the evening. Dinner tables covered in pink, light pink, red, and burgundy cloths have gold vase centerpieces filled with ranunculus, roses, anemones, and peonies. Gold ballroom chairs have cushions that match the tablecloths. Tables are set with plates printed in a blue peony pattern.
Menu
The evening’s menu features an appetizer of lobster and king crab with caviar, baby lettuce, and heirloom cherry tomatoes in a lemon-melon foam. Entrées of roasted sea bass with citrus miso sauce or Wagyu beef with green peppercorn sauce will be accompanied by baby spring vegetables, all served with Kikusui Junmai Ginjo sake, a 2015 Pierre André Chablis, or a 2014 Louis Chevallier Pinot Noir. Matcha, coconut mango, and yuzu citrus mochi will be served with green tea and coffee for dessert. The dinner is catered by Glorious Food.
Exhibition Overview
The exhibition will feature approximately 120 examples of Kawakubo’s womenswear designs for Comme des Garçons, dating from her first Paris runway show in 1981 to her most recent collection. Organized thematically rather than chronologically, the examples will examine Kawakubo’s revolutionary experiments in interstitiality or “in-betweenness”—the space between boundaries. By situating her designs within and between dualities such as East/West, male/female, and past/present, Kawakubo not only challenges the rigidity and artificiality of such binaries, but also resolves and dissolves them. To reflect this, mannequins will be arranged at eye level with no physical barriers, thereby dissolving the usual distance between objects on display and museum visitors.
Exhibition Credits
The exhibition will be curated by Andrew Bolton, Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute, who will collaborate on the exhibition design with Rei Kawakubo. Nathan Crowley will serve as exhibition production designer for the fifth time, working in collaboration with The Met’s Design Department. Raul Avila will produce the gala décor, which he has done since 2007.
