Affair: Free Screening of Goat

When: Tuesday, September 20, 2016

Hot Spot: LACMA Bing Theater, Los Angeles, CA

Deets: Includes a conversation with actors Ben Schnetzer and Nick Jonas, and director Andrew Neel

The thin line between random violence and sanctioned assault is shown in this drama from director Andrew Neel (Alice Neel, the documentary on his innovative painter grandmother), which examines the life chosen by prospective fraternity pledge Brad (Ben Schnetzer). Along with David Gordon Green and Mike Roberts, Neel adapted the memoir by Brad Land, which keeps the boundaries hazy. So much so that a frat veteran who returns to watch the new initiates being put through the motions, and tortures, of pledging, is thrown right back into a reverie of sadism and vomit (the frat bro who should know better is played by James Franco, who also produced Goat). Ben’s a nice enough guy whose decency gets him pummeled consistently, literally and figuratively, even by his paddle-hardened older brother (Nick Jonas), who hangs over his shoulder like the devil and angel seen in National Lampoon’s Animal House. By constantly moving the barrier between the threat of violence and the need for aggression—making us question the difference between aggressor and victim—Goat aptly dramatizes the plight of the need to belong for the college-age male.
