UNCENSORED at DC Public Library / Banned Books Week
Q: What is Banned Books Week?
A: Banned Books Week (September 25-October 1) is the national book community's annual celebration of the freedom to read, express and create. Since 1982, over 11,300 books have been “challenged,” which is an attempt to remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or group. A banning is the removal of those materials. UNCENSORED is DC Public Library’s brand for their celebration of Banned Books Week, which includes public programming at Martin Luther King, Jr Memorial Library and our 25 neighborhood libraries, along with a fundraiser for the DC Public Library Foundation, UNCENSORED: The Cocktail Party.
Q: What is this year’s Banned Books Week theme?
A: This year’s theme is “Diversity,” which will celebrate literature written by diverse writers that has been banned or challenged, as well as explore why diverse books are being disproportionately singled out in the first place. It’s estimated that more than half of all banned books are by authors of color, or contain events and issues concerning diverse communities, according to the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom. While “diversity” is seldom given as a reason for a challenge, it may in fact be an underlying and unspoken factor: the work is about people and issues others would prefer not to consider. Often, content addresses concerns of groups who have suffered historic and ongoing discrimination.

Q: Tell me more about the original artwork that will be displayed at MLK Jr. Memorial Library celebrating this year’s theme of diversity?
A: “...And Now the World Knows,” is a provocative display by local artist Adrienne Gaither that uses a collection of banned books to reflect upon the current state of global affairs. Pulling excerpts and quotes from notable banned books, Gaither has created a visual interpretation that surveys how much has changed throughout history and critiques the current status quo. One work will be on display the entire month of September and visible from the corner of 9th and G Streets NW on the second through fourth floor of the MLK Jr. Library, and related works will be hung on the 1st floor windows at that corner.

Q: What is UNCENSORED: The Cocktail Party?
A: UNCENSORED is an annual fundraising event hosted by the DC Public Library Foundation (DCPLF) celebrating Banned Books Week.
Q: Where and when is UNCENSORED taking place?
A: UNCENSORED will take place in the Great Hall of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library from 7-10pm on Friday, September 30, 2016. This is the last time the UNCENSORED event will take place in the MLK Jr. Library before it is closed in 2017 for a major modernization to meet the current and future needs of DC residents. It will reopen in 2020.
Q: What will UNCENSORED 2016 be like?
A: UNCENSORED will celebrate Banned Books week by transforming the Great Hall into a bar, lounge, concert venue, and market to celebrate the freedom to read, create and express. The event will spotlight this year’s theme of Diversity with participants and partners from across the District’s many multicultural communities and showcase diverse books which had once been banned.
Q: What entertainment will UNCENSORED feature?
A: UNCENSORED will feature signature literary-themed cocktails from DC bartenders’ favorite banned books; live music from local bands, and a pop-up market curated by Jennifer Barger.

Q: What is involved in the #UncensoredDC social media contest?
A: New this year UNCENSORED is celebrating Banned Books week all of September with a banned books scavenger hunt. Starting September 6th a selection of 400 banned books will be hidden throughout the District. Clues will be distributed online from DCPLF’s social accounts (Twitter:@dcpl_literati, Insta:@dcpl_literati Facebook: DCPL) along with the hashtag #UNCENSOREDDC.
Q: So if I find one of these books how do I enter to win a free pair of tickets to UNCENSORED: The Cocktail Party?
A: Once you find a hidden banned book all you need to do to enter the ticket giveaway is take a picture of the book and post the photo to Instagram or Twitter with the hashtag #UNCENSOREDDC and you’ll be entered in the giveaway! 15 winners will be chosen at random and each given a pair of tickets to attend the event. The winners will be be notified by 9/23.
Q: What types of locations will the books be hidden?
A: At places all over the city including bars, coffee shops and public spaces.
