Deets:
Day 1- Tuesday, Feb 16
5PM: The Look of Silence
The Look of Silence is Joshua Oppenheimer’s powerful companion piece to the Oscar®-nominated The Act of Killing. Through Oppenheimer’s footage of the perpetrators, a family of survivors discovers how their son was murdered in the 1965 Indonesian genocide. Adi, the youngest son, decides to do something unimaginable in a society where the murderers remain in power: an optometrist, he confronts the men who killed his brother, and while testing their eyesight, asks them to accept responsibility for their actions.

7PM: What Happened, Miss Simone?
Classically trained pianist, dive-bar chanteuse, black power icon and legendary recording artist, Nina Simone lived a life of brutal honesty, musical genius, and tortured melancholy. In this epic documentary, director Liz Garbus interweaves never-before-heard recordings and rare archival footage together with Nina’s most memorable songs, to create an unforgettable portrait of one of the least understood, yet most beloved, artists of our time.

Panel with filmmaker Liz Garbus on February 17th

9PM: Winter On Fire
This documentary chronicles events that unfolded over 93 days in 2013 and 2014. Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom witnesses the formation of a new civil rights movement in Ukraine. What started as peaceful student demonstrations supporting European integration morphed into a full-fledged violent revolution calling for the resignation of the nation’s president.

Panel with filmmaker Evgeny Afineevsky on February 17th

Day 2- Wednesday, Feb 17

5PM: Cartel Land
From filmmaker Matthew Heineman, Cartel Land is a look at the journeys of two modern-day vigilante groups and their shared enemy – the murderous Mexican drug cartels.

Panel with filmmaker Matthew Heineman on February 17th

7PM: Amy
From director Asif Kapadia, Amy tells the story of six-time Grammy-winner Amy Winehouse – in her own words. Winehouse was a musician that captured the world’s attention. A pure jazz artist in the most authentic sense – she wrote and sang from the heart using her musical gifts to analyze her own problems. The relentless and invasive media attention, coupled with Amy’s troubled relationships and addictions, led her into a cycle of self-destruction, resulting in her untimely death at age 27.

Panel with Amy Winehouse's first manager, Nick Shymansky on February 17th
