Affair: 99 Homes Free Screening and Q&A
When: Thursday, September 24, 2015 @ 7:30PM
Hot Spot: LACMA, Bing Theater, Los Angeles, CA
Deets: Includes a conversation with writer/director Ramin Bahrani
Writer/director Ramin Bahrani (Chop Shop, Goodbye Solo) continues with his unique purview—dramatizing life for those living on the economic and social margins in America—with his newest film. 99 Homes follows Dennis (Andrew Garfield), a handyman and single dad battling to hold his family together while eking out a living that doesn’t even qualify him for subsisting at the poverty level. After being evicted, Dennis is drawn into the shady world of repossessing and repurposing houses by the charismatic and ruthless real estate entrepreneur Rick Carver (Michael Shannon). The question for Dennis, after being rescued from the feat of life on the streets, is: can he sleep at night after taking on a new and equally harrowing pursuit—doing to other families what was done to him? Bahrani’s feel, dealing with pride as an almost religious construct, is the foundation for this drama, which mixes handheld camera work to take viewers into the lives of America’s working poor with a more elegant visual style to show the calm in the lifestyle that seemed beyond Dennis’ means—the middle class, the ideal which many take for granted and to which many still aspire.
