Deets: A host of stars, including Lady Gaga, Jake Gyllenhaal,Andrew Garfield, Halle Berry, Jon Hamm, Dakota Johnson, Elizabeth Banks and Jane Fonda will be at the HFPA’s annual grants dinner at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills on August 13 to present more than $2 million in donations to non-profit entertainment-related organizations and scholarship programs.
The amount tops last year’s contributions of more than $1.9 million. Other stars helping to hand out the donations will be Allison Janney, America Ferrera,Benicio Del Toro, Brie Larson, Bryan Cranston, Ellen Page, Ice Cube, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jason Isaacs, Joe Manganiello, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Oscar Isaac, Randall Park, Saoirse Ronan, Sarah Silverman, Sharon Stone, Sophia Bush, Topher Grace and Ty Burrell.
So far, the HFPA has committed more than $23.9 million in grants, handed out over 1,000 scholarships and restored more than 90 films. Contributions made by the HFPA will aid a wide range of projects, including the preservation of films, higher education, training and mentoring and the promotion of cultural exchange through cinema.Historically the Film Foundation has received the largest single donation and this year will receive $350,000. Among other donations the UCLA film school is to get $125,00, the L.A. County Museum of Art $125,000 and Film Aid International and Cal State Long Beach, Los Angeles and Northridge $60,000 each.
Among its many additional charities, the HFPA provides scholarships, supports filmmaker training in Kenyan refugee camps and donates money to theater groups, musicians, storytellers’ foundations, film archives and youth projects, as well as many other worthy causes.
Over the years, the event has evolved into almost a mini-Globes with its own red carpet arrivals and a roster of high profile stars showing up to accept not statuettes but sizable checks from the HFPA on behalf of a wide range of. As the contributions are handed out, a phalanx of TV news crews set up across the back of the ballroom will capture the celebrities in action and a few hours later the results will be seen all over the media.
The dinner symbolizes the kickoff to the awards season because gathered around the power tables at the Beverly Wilshire are the Hollywood marketers who will compete in the coming months for Golden Globes nominations and wins.
