Deets: A leading international contemporary and modern art fair and one of the most important annual art events in New York, takes place every March on Piers 92 & 94 in central Manhattan. The Armory Show is devoted to showcasing the most important artworks of the 20th and 21st centuries. In its sixteen years the fair has become an international institution, combining a selection of the world's leading galleries with an exceptional program of arts events and exhibitions throughout New York during the celebrated Armory Arts Week.
The Armory Show is pleased to announce that Lawrence Abu Hamdan, based between Beirut and London, is the Commissioned Artist for the 2015 fair. In this capacity, Abu Hamdan will help create the visual identity of the upcoming edition and undertake a unique on-site project at the fair. He will also produce a limited-edition artwork with proceeds benefitting The Museum of Modern Art. Abu Hamdan’s art explores the relationship between politics, human rights, international law, and the act of listening through the production of audio documentaries and essays, installations, sculptures, photographs, and performances. Analyzing fundamental concepts of political speech—the oath, the right to silence, freedom of the press—is at the core of his work, often demonstrating that the battle for free speech is largely about controlling the conditions in which we are heard.
