When: Tuesday, December 2, 2014 @ 7:30PM
Hot Spot: MoMA Theatre, NYC
Deets: A special advanced screening of Unbroken was held by MoMA as part of its Contender 2014 Series. Angelina's directorial debut was visually striking and the storyline was touching delivering an incredible message of faith. The screening was followed by a Q&A with Director, Angelina Jolie and cast members Jack O'Connell, Miyavi, Garrett Hedlund, and Finn Whittrock. When speaking about the late Louis Zamperini, whom the film is based on, Director Angelina Jolie stated he "was more remarkable than we could ever put on film [and he wanted to] make a film that's not about how extraordinary [he is] but a film that makes people remember that they all have strength inside of them." Jack O'Connell, who plays Louis Zamperini, explained that in order to play the role "it had to be difficult... it had to hurt to a degree." Miyavi, a Japanese rock singer making his acting debut as Mitsuhiro Watanabe, the sadistic WWII prison camp sargeant in Unbroken, explained his difficult decision to accept the role. "I didn't want to represent any negative side of Japan [where] I was born and raised... I was scared. I was not sure I was capable [of this as] an actor." He changed his mind after he "met Angie [who said she] wanted to make something meaningful which could be a bridge between America and Japan. So it's all about the message of forgiveness, unbroken spirit, and how strong a human being can be."
Film Synopsis: Academy Award® winner Angelina Jolie directs and produces Unbroken, an epic drama that follows the incredible life of Olympian and war hero Louis “Louie” Zamperini (Jack O’Connell) who, along with two other crewmen, survived in a raft for 47 days after a near-fatal plane crash in WWII—only to be caught by the Japanese Navy and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp. Adapted from Laura Hillenbrand’s (“Seabiscuit: An American Legend”) enormously popular book, Unbroken brings to the big screen Zamperini’s unbelievable and inspiring true story about the resilient power of the human spirit.
